Nothing funny happened on the way to the Forum
Thank goodness for Rick Steves and his sensible European guide books (and his even more sensible earth-toned clothing). Without Steves’ practical advice and guided walking tours through Rome, I don’t know if we would have sought out the Roman Forum on our own when my wife and I were there for our honeymoon.
On paper, it sounded interesting: the ruins of ancient Rome’s civic and social center. Viewing it in person is truly awe-inspiring. Towering columns reach into the sky, crumbling buildings hint at former greatness, and an understated temple announces the site of Caesar’s funeral pyre. The area is definitely one of those “whole is greater than the sum of its parts” situations. While the aforementioned sights were intriguing enough on their own, surveying the whole forum and imagining what once stood at the site gave me a much better glimpse into history than I think I’ve ever experienced.
